<image:caption>This 2 1/2 story glass curtain wall integrates solar thin film coating on the darker glass to generate 2.5kw of power. The south facing curtain wall is the atrium gathering space where the administrative offices, gymnasium, media center and cafe come together. There is an additional small 10kw roof mounted PV system as well as the budget allowed for. The building was designed to use 50% less energy than a conventional school, considered net zero energy ready by the Department of Energy.</image:caption>

<image:title>Sustainable Architecture | Planning | Preservation - Carbon Neutrality Action Plan - The College of New Jersey (TCNJ)*</image:title>
<image:caption>We worked with TCNJ to benchmark their carbon footprint in Scope 1, 2 and 3 levels and then develop a comprehensive plan to eliminate and/or offset all greenhouse gas emissions related to climate change. The plan contains a unique gant chart prioritization using the triple bottom line approach. The University has implemented several significant features including operating a campus-wide heating and cooling system using CHP, and designed to LEED certified level on several buildings on campus. TCNJ is a 300 acre campus and includes 3 million square feet of buildings and houses 2,500 students with another 5-7,000 commuting. (*Led by Jason Kliwinski while Director of Sustainability at Spiezle Architectural Group)</image:caption>

<image:title>Sustainable Architecture | Planning | Preservation - Montclair State University - Center for Environmental & Life Sciences, LEED GOLD Certified</image:title>
<image:caption>LEED Administration/Oversight AOR: SLAM The GBC Team acted as LEED Administrator on behalf of Montclair State University to manage and oversee the LEED Gold certification of this new 100,000sf mixed use lab, office and classroom building. By identifying the sustainable features the campus inherently could provide to this project such as access to mass transit, habitat & open space preservation and green vehicle support the project was able to exceed the client’s expectations of a Silver certification & reach Gold at no additional cost or schedule impact. The sustainability of a campus should never be underestimated. Also by working closely with subcontractors to document materials credits we were able to help ensure that the construction credits and points anticipated were actually achieved.</image:caption>

<image:title>Sustainable Architecture | Planning | Preservation - Sustainable Renovation, Preservation & Adaptive Reuse</image:title>
<image:caption>This existing historic farmstead, originally established around 1744 by the Holcombe family, has been restored to its former glory and upgraded with a goal of reaching net zero electric energy, water and waste. The 3,000sf home built over periods of time from 1744 to the early 1900s serves as the private residence and organic farm of the new Owners. Our team helped assess this building prior to purchase, develop a scope of work & budget, navigate the complicated historic preservation and D&R Canal Commission review and approval process, prepare and submit construction drawings for permitting, retain various contractors as the Owner’s representative and oversee construction. Sustainable features include 12kW solar panel system making the home and barns completely off-grid for power, use of healthy and environmentally responsible materials and finishes throughout, energy efficiency upgrades such as added insulation to existing roofs and wood frame wall, weather sealing of existing doors and windows and design for daylighting and natural ventilation. The project also achieved zero waste during construction by instituting a significant onsite sorting process of demolition materials, salvage and reuse of windows, doors & other materials for a net zero construction waste project.
